The ownership and financing of Meta's giant data center in northeast Louisiana needs more scrutiny from state regulators, according to environmental advocates who say the structure increases the risk for utility ratepayers.
Environmental law nonprofit Earthjustice asked the Louisiana Public Service Commission on Wednesday to investigate whether the newly disclosed structure of the campus under construction in Richland Parish weakens protections promised to customers of Entergy, the New Orleans-based utility building the infrastructure needed to power the massive project.

The Madison Parish Police Jury re-elected its leadership during its Jan. 12 regular meeting at the Madison Parish Courthouse.
Jurors unanimously selected Jane G. Sanders as president, Johnny Hughes as vice president and Jerry Hicks as finance chairman. The jury also approved Margarett Dew to continue serving as secretary-treasurer, a staff position.
A representative of the parish’s sales tax collector, based in Concordia Parish, provided year-end collection totals and discussed how the office tracks compliance across jurisdictions.

The Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a residence in Tallulah on the morning of Friday, Jan. 16, 2026, with assistance from Delta Marshall, the Franklin Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Tensas Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement officials took Percy Blair Jr. and Audreale Gray into custody during the operation, the sheriff’s office said. Children who were inside the residence were released to family members before the search began.

CASA of Northeast Louisiana is calling on community members in the Tensas, Madison, and East Carroll parishes to step forward as Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers in 2026 to help children in foster care due to abuse and neglect.
CASA volunteers serve as trained advocates for children involved in the foster care system, ensuring their needs, safety, and best interests are clearly represented in court. For many children, a CASA volunteer is the one consistent adult focused solely on their well-being and long-term outcomes.

The credit card program used by Louisiana's universities, health department and other state entities is due for an inspection, according to officials who cite high levels of governmental inefficiencies.
Expenditures on the LaCarte procurement card will be examined as part of a broader crackdown by the Louisiana Fiscal Responsibility Program. The program, modeled after the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency, has found almost $1 billion in inefficiencies across state government, Gov. Jeff Landry announced Wednesday.

A Louisiana refinery will expand to produce more critical minerals for the U.S. as a result of an investment from the federal government.
The Department of War is spending $150 million in its partnership with ATALCO, operator of the nation’s only alumina refinery in Gramercy. The money will be used to double the plant’s output and establish production of gallium, a critical mineral essential in making a variety of high-tech manufactured goods.

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s $124 million plan to make Shreveport a hub for the film and entertainment industry has received a financial commitment from the state.
Louisiana Economic Development on Monday announced a cooperative endeavor agreement with G-Unit Film & Television, Jackson’s production company that began operating in the city in 2024. Under the performance-based contract, the state will reimburse G-Unit up to $50 million to redevelop three entertainment venues in the city. G-Unit has committed to spending $74 million.

President Trump is a master at keeping attention on himself, but when he goes too far he exposes himself to criticism.
Sometimes this is well deserved. A good example is the recent news that his Justice Department has issued subpoenas to leaders of the Federal Reserve over Senate testimony about the $2.5 billion cost of renovating the central bank’s 90-year-old building in Washington.

Kazi’s Sweet Adventures, a home-based baking business in Tallulah, has been operating since October 2025 and offers cookies and cheesecake on an order-only basis.
The business is owned by JaleeSha Brown and is named after her son, Kazi, who is 11 months old. Brown said the business was created to introduce her child to entrepreneurship as he grows. Brown and the child’s father, Tyler Cross, help operate the business.
“We bake cookies. We also make very special sweet treats,” Brown said.

The Tallulah City Council voted Jan. 8 to declare the former Coca-Cola Building surplus property, a step required under state law before the city can move forward with a sale.
The resolution passed on a 3-1 vote, with Councilmember Toriano Wells voting against the measure. Councilmembers Marjorie Day, Carla Turner-Harris and Lisa Houston voted in favor. Councilmember Joseph Scott was absent.

Jewish Clarksdale residents and other members of the community discussed their thoughts and feelings after a fire was set to Beth Israel Congregation in northeast Jackson on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 10.
Spencer Pittman, 19, a former Coahoma Community College baseball player and Madison resident, has been charged with arson for allegedly setting the congregation on fire.

A Vicksburg man was arrested Monday following a vehicle pursuit that began in Tallulah and ended near the village of Delta, according to the Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were assisting the Tallulah Police Department on Jan. 12 while searching for a person involved in an altercation at Blooms Apartments when Deputy Berry observed a suspect vehicle traveling east on U.S. Highway 80, the sheriff’s office said.

One of the Southeast's top economic development executives will take the reins of the Tate County Economic Development Foundation.
The Tate County Board of Supervisors and the Tate County Economic Development Foundation have announced the hiring of Joe Max Higgins to fill the vacancy in the community’s community’s economic and industrial development organization.
The announcement was made Monday night following a meeting of the EDF Board and community stakeholders.

Gov. Jeff Landry has called a special election to fill a vacancy in the Madison Parish Justice of the Peace office for Districts 1 and 3 following the resignation of Kathy Grady.
Grady resigned effective Dec. 31, 2025, creating a vacancy with more than 12 months remaining in the term. Under Louisiana law, the governor is required to call a special election to fill the unexpired term.

The Madison High School Jaguars girls basketball team held a 3-8 record as of Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, following a schedule that included non-district and district games through late December.
Madison opened the season Nov. 18 with a loss to Vidalia, followed by a loss to Bastrop on Nov. 21. The Jaguars faced Vidalia again on Nov. 24 and then played a road game at Vidalia on Dec. 2. Madison continued road play on Dec. 3 at Tensas before earning its first win of the season with a 41-21 victory over Block on Dec. 5.
