Democrats in the U.S. Senate tanked the Homeland Security full-year funding bill in a last-ditch vote Thursday, all but guaranteeing a partial government shutdown starting Saturday.
This is the second time in less than six months that Democrats have forced a shutdown over policy demands, with the holdup this time centered around immigration enforcement measures.

Additional federal aid is needed for Louisiana to recover from a storm that hammered the northern part of the state with ice, extreme cold and widespread utility outages in January, according to the state's congressional delegation.
The delegation said it supports Gov. Jeff Landry's request for more assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, arguing the state has already racked up more than $11.39 million in storm-related costs.

It didn’t take long for the bickering to start after the Senate Education Committee on Feb. 3 unanimously killed House Bill 2, the wide-ranging school choice proposal, with only two minutes of consideration.
Gov. Tate Reeves said he’s never been more disappointed in elected officials than he was in Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and Sen. Dennis DeBar, R-Leakesville, the chairman of the Education Committee. The governor claimed the two worked closely with Democrats to kill the school choice bill, and accused them of hiding their efforts from conservatives.

One of the strange things about mass media is that you deal in masses of people. Every week we have multiple obituaries in our newspapers. Each of the deceased leaves behind a wake in the water of humanity, touching other lives in innumerable and profound ways.
Our God creates so many people and yet each person is unique and precious. It is mind boggling, but that’s simply the way it is. Our job at the newspaper is to chronicle their passing. We cannot begin to fully express the magnitude of their journey.

There have been recent reports of large job cuts across the country. E-commerce and technology giant Amazon, for example, is eliminating 16,000 corporate jobs, partly to reduce its organizational structure — but also because it expects “efficiency gains” as artificial intelligence is used more extensively across the company.
Almost at the same time, United Parcel Service said it will eliminate 30,000 delivery jobs — in part because it is getting less business from Amazon.
