Mississippi’s lone Democrat serving in Congress, Bennie Thompson in the 2nd District, voted against the SAVE Act last week, which is intended to implement Voter ID across the U.S.
“I did not vote in support of the SAVE America Act because it would make it harder for Black and rural citizens to exercise their right to register to vote and cast their ballot,” Thompson wrote on Facebook. “It creates new barriers for people who already face enough challenges, including affording and accessing the proper documents needed to vote.”

Magnolia Heights took on Madison Ridgeland Academy last week in the semi-finals of the MAIS Boys Basketball Playoffs.
While the Chiefs played hard, they faced a long and tall MRA team that has rolled through the playoffs.
MRA went on to win the game 62 to 49.
The Chiefs played Madison St. Joe on Saturday in the consolation game and lost to St. Joe 59 to 37.
The Magnolia Height School Boys will continue their season today at 3:30 p.m. in the MAIS Overall State Tournament to be held at Mississippi College in Clinton.

Planters Holding Company, Inc. (“Planters”), the holding company for Planters Bank and Trust Company, has announced the successful completion of its merger with Saint Joseph, Louisiana based BSJ Bancshares, Inc. (“BSJ Bancshares”), the holding company for Cross Keys Bank.

Ensuring that women with high-risk pregnancies get to the right hospital in a timely manner for their delivery is the primary goal of the new Obstetrics (OB) System of Care.
The Mississippi Board of Health recently passed the final rules and regulations for the system, which took effect on February 13. The OB System of Care marks the fourth system of care in the state, joining systems for heart attacks, strokes and trauma, that will save lives and provide the proper level of care for pregnant women and their babies.

Both chambers of the Mississippi Legislature have advanced bills aiming to crack down on immigration, despite some lawmakers raising concerns that the federal government is responsible for enforcement and that the proposals could inadvertently harm U.S. citizens.

Big changes are coming to garbage collection in Senatobia.
In a move to cut down on monthly and yearly costs, the Board of Aldermen used a 4-1 vote and approved a proposal earlier this month to outsource the city’s garbage collection to Waste Pro. Aldermen also authorized a monthly rate hike from $18 to $23 for residential customers and an increase from $20 to $30 in commercial rates. That motion passed by a 3-2 margin.

His signature legislation, HB 2, narrowly passed in the House before moving to the Senate Education Committee. There, within 90 seconds, the education freedom bill was unanimously killed by a voice vote.
