Efforts proposed by the Mississippi House to temporarily allow liquor stores, restaurants and casinos to bypass the state’s backlogged Alcoholic Beverage Control have died in conference.
Package stores and other businesses that sell liquor and spirits are suffering from lack of product due to software issues with the ABC warehouse’s conveyor belt system as well as the construction of a new warehouse. Some businesses have even taken steps to sue the state over the backlog and loss of product.

To the surprise of perhaps nobody, the Mississippi Supreme Court on Friday denied the NCAA’s petition to appeal Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss’ injunction against the governing body of college athletics.
That means the final hurdle likely has been cleared for Chambliss, one of the nation’s most exciting and productive players, to play for the Rebels this fall. Chambliss will enter the season as one of the top candidates for the Heisman Trophy.

Filming equipment for “Southern Dish” points toward the series’ host, Lydia Chassaniol of Winona.
For well over a year, state Sen. Lydia Chassaniol of Winona and a Mississippi Public Broadcasting film crew have been crisscrossing the state with a delectable purpose.
That is to create a new TV series that will engage the state’s would-be visitors and its residents by introducing them to restaurants and their chefs statewide in order to tell Mississippi’s story through their food.
The result is MPB’s new series, “Southern Dish.” Chassaniol, had the idea for the series, raised the money to fund it and serves as its host.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the U.S. Marshal Service that occurred Monday morning at a residence on Mill Street in Indianola.
Agents with the U.S. Marshal Service were attempting to serve a warrant for rape on a subject at a residence in Indianola. Upon arrival to the residence, the suspect displayed a weapon toward the agents. An agent then discharged his weapon striking the suspect, causing fatal injury. Agents involved did not sustain any serious physical injuries.

As Aaron Ford neared the finish line of the Viking Half Marathon Saturday morning, his focus was on encouraging other runners.

Ford, a 43-year-old from Saltillo, finished first in the half marathon with a time of 1 hour, 27 minutes and 55 seconds. He is a physical therapist operating a clinic in Tupelo.

A fire, shown here on Friday, has expanded to over 3,000 acres in Carroll County between Coila and Vaiden.
Updated at 2 p.m. with information from the Mississippi Forestry Commission.
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves issued a statement Saturday morning stating that the size of the fire in Carroll County has increased to 3,000 acres and has forced the evacuations along three county roads.

Residents were evacuated from 10 Carroll County homes Friday because of a fire that covered 2,400 acres.
A fire blazing through more than 2,000 acres in Carroll County led to evacuations from 10 homes Friday, a state fire official said Friday afternoon.
Residents of homes on County Roads 163, 218 and 360 were being evacuated, Chris Burnham with the Mississippi Forestry Commission said just before 5 p.m. Friday.
The fire encompassed 2,400 acres, an increase of 600 acres from what Burnham had reported at 4:10 p.m. Friday, when 45% of the blaze was contained.
