Michael James, a transfer from Meridian Community College and product of H.W. Byers High School in Byhalia, has emerged as the leader of the Mississippi Valley State University men’s basketball team this season.
The 6-foot-1 junior lifted the Delta Devils to victory Saturday, only their second of the season, as he stole the in-bounds pass with seconds remaining on the clock to help MVSU claim a 72-71 Southwestern Athletic Conference win over visiting Texas Southern at the Harrison HPER Complex in Itta Bena.

Two appropriation bills were passed in the Mississippi House last week concerning the state’s K-12 education system. Combined, the bills provide just over $5 billion in funding for education in Mississippi.
Funding for state general education programs and the Mississippi Student Funding Formula under HB 1935 is being proposed at $2.1 billion and nearly $3.2 billion, respectively. This includes special and federal funds as well.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) clinics will remain closed statewide Monday and Tuesday.
Medical Center teams continue to respond to the Feb. 19 cyberattack alongside federal and state agencies and national experts in cybersecurity.
"Our phone systems and ability to receive or send emails remain down or unreliable, UMMC said in a statement Sunday.

If it were not in the days of electronic devices, I would carry around a small photo album rather than a phone full of pictures so that I can show everyone my “grands.” They range in age, with the youngest being just a little over a year old.

The Air National Guard is hosting the Sentry South 26-2 exercise Feb. 20 to March 6, at the Gulfport Combat Readiness Training Center, Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center, and other locations around the state.
The Air National Guard announced this week that approximately 1,100 service members from active, guard and reserve components of the U.S. military are participating in this combat training exercise.

During a House Education Committee meeting held this week in Jackson, Chairman State Rep. Rob Roberson (R) announced it would be their “last meeting.”
“This is our only meeting that we will be having, from what I am understanding, just to give you all a heads up,” Roberson said during the brief five-minute committee meeting. “These two bills are what we are bringing out. Hopefully we’re able to work with the Senate and get things moving in a good direction.”

The Tate County unemployment rate dipped under three percent for the first time in over a year, according to December statistics from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES).
Data from MDES shows Tate County with a 2.9% jobless rate – a sharp decrease from 3.6% in November.
Tate ranked 17th in the state in unemployment in December and the rate of 2.9% includes an estimated 11,960 of the eligible 12,310 residents, at least 16 years of age, actively searching for employment in December but could not secure a job.

The House passed a pair of bills on last week that would reshape laws surrounding the sale of alcohol in Mississippi.
The first would allow the direct shipment of liquor to Mississippians’ homes, and the second would let local authorities pass ordinances allowing the sale of alcohol on Sundays.

House Speaker Jason White was not happy the Senate killed his expansive school choice bill, without even taking a full vote.
Now House leaders appear to be sending a message to the other chamber: Most of the education bills passed by the Senate have been sent to two committees in the House, or “double-referred,” a tactic often used to kill bills or delay their passage and overhaul them.
