Lawmakers in Congress are confronting another federal funding deadline with no clear agreement on how to keep the government funded, raising the possibility of a government shutdown early next year.
Congress must pass a spending bill or a temporary funding measure before federal funding expires. Without action, a lapse in appropriations could halt operations for many federal agencies and furlough hundreds of thousands of government workers.

Each year we gathered amid candlelight,
to sing inspired carols, and our hearts to delight. To proclaim the message of God’s advent to earth, in the child, to which Mary long ago gave birth.
Sacred music honors this child born to Mary, enhancing the worship in our sanctuary;
For all who have gathered, on this winter night, can be warmed by the hope that Christ’s birth brings to light.
Even this message, written in rhyme, that worship might be, uplifting and sublime; For ‘tis fitting that we celebrate with great joy, God’s gift of himself, in this infant boy.

Happy New Year! 2026 beckons.
Hard to believe it’s that time again. The holiday season is drawing to a close. One more week and then it’s time to tighten the belt and get on with the new year.
At 67, my New Year’s celebrations are getting a little less rowdy and late. When I was young, I wouldn’t even dream about not staying up until midnight to watch the new year roll in. Now it’s a bit less exciting.
