Construction crews were busy Monday putting a new roof on top of Highland Hills Medical Center. The Senatobia hospital is in line to receive federal funds via the state under the Rural Health Transformation Program to help with facility improvements and workforce development.
The medicine of healthcare is complex and so is the business of healthcare and its relationship to local, state and federal government.
President Donald Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ – the federal budget bill for 2026 – allocated $50 billion over five years to be divided up among 50 states under the Rural Health Transformation Program and Mississippi’s portion for 2026 is $205,907,220. But details of how that will filter down to Highland Hills, Tate County’s hospital in Senatobia, remain to be seen.

CASA of Northeast Louisiana is calling on community members in the Tensas, Madison, and East Carroll parishes to step forward as Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers in 2026 to help children in foster care due to abuse and neglect.
CASA volunteers serve as trained advocates for children involved in the foster care system, ensuring their needs, safety, and best interests are clearly represented in court. For many children, a CASA volunteer is the one consistent adult focused solely on their well-being and long-term outcomes.

Louisiana parishes would have a say in how carbon capture and sequestration projects are approved and developed in their jurisdictions under bills filed by Rep. Mike Johnson, a Republican who represents Pineville and serves as acting House Speaker in the state legislature.
“These bills are about fairness, property rights, and respect for local voices,” Johnson said in a statement. “No private company should have the power to force a family off their land, and no community should be sidelined when decisions directly affect their parish.”

This community matters. Every life, every story, and every season represented here has purpose.

The credit card program used by Louisiana's universities, health department and other state entities is due for an inspection, according to officials who cite high levels of governmental inefficiencies.
Expenditures on the LaCarte procurement card will be examined as part of a broader crackdown by the Louisiana Fiscal Responsibility Program. The program, modeled after the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency, has found almost $1 billion in inefficiencies across state government, Gov. Jeff Landry announced Wednesday.
