Car tag fees in Mississippi are the second-highest in the United States, often exceeding $1,000 annually, and remain increasingly difficult for the average taxpayer to predict according to a new report from the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor.
“Taxpayers all over the state have talked to me about how complex and expensive it is to get a car tag,” said Auditor Shad White. “They complain for a good reason: it’s hard for the average family to know how and why that bill is so big when they pay it.”

CLEVELAND — Through support from the National Park Service and the Mississippi Development Authority, the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area (MDNHA) has awarded a total of $231,000 to 14 organizations for this fall’s festival/event grants and cultural heritage grants.

State Senator Lydia Chassaniol (R), chair of the Senate Tourism Committee, brought back a bill this week that aims to create a standalone Mississippi Department of Tourism.
“The bill is virtually the same thing that was passed last year,” Chassaniol told the committee of SB 2016. “It went through the Senate. It went through the House. Got to the governor’s office and didn’t get signed.”

Last week felt like I should have been working in the garden, flying a kite, or wade fishing for crappie. Other than the two weeks of “seasonal” cold weather we experienced, it has been one of the mildest winters on record. Doves are already cooing, frogs are croaking, and turtles are sunning themselves on logs in ponds and creeks. I have noticed daffodils and jonquils emerging from their short winter nap, ready to show off to the world blazing white and yellow petals. In fact, trees are on the verge of bud break with some species already leafing out.

In yet another sign of the times, a deranged teenager torched the Beth Israel Synagogue in the heart of northeast Jackson.
I have been to the beautiful synagogue many times for seminars and funerals. I am heartbroken by this. I am confident my sentiment is shared by almost every Northsider.

In the first week of the 2026 legislative session, four bills were filed to ban cell phone use in Mississippi public school classrooms.
Two of those bills came out of the Senate, where SB 2099 was authored by State Senator Briggs Hopson (R) and SB 2069 was authored by Senator Dennis DeBar (R).

State Rep. Omeria Scott, a 32-year Democratic lawmaker representing Clarke, Jasper and Jones counties, has filed a longshot bill to prohibit Mississippi police officers from using Tasers or stun guns.
In response, Lumberton Police Chief Elsie Cowart said she believes the measure would be “a terrible thing for law enforcement.”

State Auditor Shad White announced that Special Agents from his office have arrested Nancy Anglada, former Jackson County Inventory Control Director, for allegedly submitting fraudulent training reimbursements and unauthorized use of a Fuelman card for her own personal vehicle.
“We will continue to have a zero-tolerance policy for theft of taxpayer dollars,” said State Auditor Shad White. “Our office will continue to work with prosecutors to get record results for taxpayers.”

The man suspected of setting fire to Mississippi’s largest synagogue allegedly confessed his crimes to law enforcement and referred to the building in northeast Jackson as the “synagogue of Satan,” according to a federal court document filed Monday.
Stephen Spencer Pittman, 19, of Madison – who usually goes by his middle name – is facing federal charges for using fire to maliciously damage or destroy a building involved in interstate commerce, according to a probable cause affidavit in the U.S. Southern District of Mississippi.
