The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the U.S. Marshal Service that occurred Monday morning at a residence on Mill Street in Indianola.
According to Sunflower County Coroner Heather Burton, the deceased has been identified as Demetric Bryant, 25, of Indianola. Burton said that his body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy.

As Aaron Ford neared the finish line of the Viking Half Marathon Saturday morning, his focus was on encouraging other runners.
“Finish strong!” he yelled to Archer Russell, a participant in the 10K race who was just ahead.
Ford, a 43-year-old from Saltillo, finished first in the half marathon with a time of 1 hour, 27 minutes and 55 seconds. He is a physical therapist operating a clinic in Tupelo.

A fire, shown here on Friday, has expanded to over 3,000 acres in Carroll County between Coila and Vaiden.
Updated at 2 p.m. with information from the Mississippi Forestry Commission.
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves issued a statement Saturday morning stating that the size of the fire in Carroll County has increased to 3,000 acres and has forced the evacuations along three county roads.

A Burn Ban has been issued for Grenada County until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, in hopes of preventing wildfires such as this from spreading throughout the city and county.
A burn ban is now in effect for Grenada County due to extremely dry conditions and recent wildfire activity in the area.
The Grenada County Board of Supervisors approved a request for the ban today, which was submitted to Region 2 Regional Forester Dennis Dauterive of the Mississippi Forestry Commission. The commission approved the request.
The burn ban took immediate effect on Friday, March 27, and will remain in place through 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31. Conditions will be reevaluated beginning Wednesday, April 1.

Residents were evacuated from 10 Carroll County homes Friday because of a fire that covered 2,400 acres.
A fire blazing through more than 2,000 acres in Carroll County led to evacuations from 10 homes Friday, a state fire official said Friday afternoon.
Residents of homes on County Roads 163, 218 and 360 were being evacuated, Chris Burnham with the Mississippi Forestry Commission said just before 5 p.m. Friday.
The fire encompassed 2,400 acres, an increase of 600 acres from what Burnham had reported at 4:10 p.m. Friday, when 45% of the blaze was contained.

Grenada County Sheriff's Office deputy Steve Winters secures the scene on Minga Road Friday morning.
The Grenada County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Friday morning, March 27, on Minga Road in the Ligon Estates area.
The victim has been identified as Marston D. Jones, 48, of Grenada. Deputies said the suspect, Tyjuan M. Jones, 22, also of Grenada, was taken into custody without incident in connection to the shooting.

Debris piles throughout the City of Grenada like this one in Avenue of Pines will remain curbside after the City Council failed to secure a debris removal and monitoring company or set new spending caps for the work.
Debris will continue to pile up curbside after the Grenada City Council received no bids to complete storm debris removal and monitoring services during a Zoom meeting last Tuesday afternoon.
City Manager Dr. Trina George informed Councilmembers that the city had not received any responses to its requests for proposals (RFPs) for the work. The Council then voted to officially close the RFP process and instead declare emergency procurement, allowing Dr. George to directly solicit quotes and negotiate contracts for debris removal and monitoring services.

Average gasoline prices in Mississippi have risen 18.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.52/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 2,014 stations in Mississippi. Prices in Mississippi are 107.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 89.6 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has increased 27.0 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $5.227 per gallon, the highest level since November 24, 2022.

Turnrow Books, along with Turnrow Art Co. and Turnrow Café, is reopening its doors on Wednesday after a fire nearly destroyed the downtown bookstore nearly three years ago. The business also is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Caregiver background checks will now be required every two years instead of annually.
Both chambers in the Mississippi Legislature have agreed to minor changes to the state’s medical cannabis program this session.
The House concurred with the Senate’s changes to HB 895 this week.
Under the amended provisions, the time of validity of a patient’s medical cannabis card will remain at 12 months, but the time a caregiver needs to undergo a follow-up background check was extended slightly.
