Greenwood Leflore Hospital signed a letter of intent to discuss the possibility of the University of Mississippi Medical Center taking over its services, according to state and local officials and an excerpted document obtained by Mississippi Today.
The public hospital in Greenwood has faced financial struggles for years and warned as recently as December that it was on the brink of closure because of debt owed to the Mississippi Division of Medicaid.

I grew up in a military family. People ask me all the time if I was in the military and I look them in the eye and say, “The first 18 years of my life.”
I’m not fussing, but I will say growing up in the 1970s, my view of the world was very different from my civilian friends in Clay County, Mississippi.
Daddy was in Field Maintenance in the U.S. Air Force, his specialty was hydraulics and pneudraulics on multi-engine aircraft.

STARKVILLE — Three Mississippi State students are recipients of the highly competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and will have a portion of their tuition, travel and living expenses covered as they pursue additional educational opportunities abroad this year.
Scholarship recipients include senior computer science major A’mya Hoskins of Senatobia, junior software engineering major Ricky Nguyen of Ocean Springs and senior anthropology major Amanda Whitehead of Pickens.

In this new era of college football so heavily focused on the almighty dollar, schools in states with no income tax have sought to use that to their benefit when recruiting players.
The University of Central Florida, University of Houston and others promoted the lack of a state income tax across their social media platforms in January. The unique marketing was done in hopes of distinguishing themselves from other universities competing to land coveted transfer portal players in states that do require an income tax.

The penalties for willfully filing a false child abuse claim could be more severe in Mississippi after the Senate Judiciary B Committee passed a House bill recently to include thousands of dollars in fines and jail.
HB 1577 states that if a false report is filed, that person can be fined up to $5,000 and jailed for up to one year.
Senator Judiciary B Chairman State Senator Joey Fillingane (R) said bills of this nature are always a challenge. In the end, he said, the measure should prevent people from making false reports.

A House bill aimed at increasing public school accountability in Mississippi awaits consideration in the Senate.

Cate Hargett, an 11-year-old in Greenwood, needs a bone marrow transplant as the search for her perfect donor match continues.
Cate, who dreams of becoming a librarian or author, was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder when she was 2 months old.
The Pillow Academy fifth grader has continued to fight bone marrow failure, which occurs when the tissue inside bones cannot produce enough healthy blood cells on its own.

The Magnolia State will be the first state to ban neutrality agreements in the workplace and just the fourth to enact the right to a private ballot in unionization efforts.
With the signature of Governor Tate Reeves (R), Mississippi will become the first state in the U.S. to ban so-called neutrality agreements in the workplace.
A “neutrality agreement” is a contract between a union and an employer under which the employer agrees to support a union’s attempt to organize its workforce.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney said Thursday that he expects those numbers to climb as reporting continues.
The Mississippi Insurance Department reports that over 12,000 claims have been filed totaling in excess of $107 million related to damage from Winter Storm Fern.
The storm left much of North Mississippi blanketed in ice for days with over 100,000 without power. The impacts were felt in nearly half of the state’s counties, with 29 deaths reported as a result of the storm.
