Heading into the 2026 season, pitching was one of the strengths for the Grenada High School baseball team. Five games into the season, first-year head coach C.J. Hodges’ staff has lived up to the preseason attention.
Last weekend, the Chargers had road games last Friday at Heritage Academy and last Saturday at Class 5A Pontotoc. In both games, the GHS pitchers flexed their muscles in two wins.

Rebounding may be the most important statistic in basketball.
It turned out to be the undoing for the Kirk Academy Raiderettes in their opening round game against Class AAAA Jackson Academy in the Midsouth Association of Independent Schools Overall Basketball Tournament at Mississippi College in Clinton last Wednesday night. The Lady Raiders outrebounded Kirk 45-21 and limited the Raiderettes to 24 percent shooting en route to a 49-33 victory.

It’s been a busy two-week start to the season for the Grenada Chargers’ tennis team. Since the Feb. 10 opener, veteran head coach Chris Klinck’s squad has been played seven matches including three matches last week.
The week opened last Tuesday with a 5-2 home win over Class 4A West Lauderdale. It was a different story last Thursday as the Chargers traveled to Class 4A New Albany, losing a 4-3 decision. The week closed with a 7-0 home win over Winona last Friday to improve the overall record to 3-4.

Both Grenada High School basketball coaches Kendrick Conley and Roderick Moore knew the challenges their teams faced were tough in the opening round of the North 6A boys and girls tournaments, which began last Friday for girls and followed for the boys last Saturday at selected sites across the state.
Conley’s girls made the 90-minute trip into Madison County to face Region 2 runner-up Canton High School. Grenada trailed 15-9 midway the second quarter and 26-16 at halftime. The host Lady Tigers pulled away in the second half and won a 56-34 decision.

Investigators with the Grenada Police Department and Grenada County Sheriff's Office search for shell casings at the scene of a shooting Monday afternoon on Dean Drive.
An arrest has been made in connection with a shooting Monday afternoon on Dean Drive that left two men injured and drew a large law enforcement response in the heart of Grenada.
Marshall Phillips, 19, of Water Valley was arrested Tuesday, Feb. 17, and charged with two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the incident, Grenada Police Department Chief George Douglas said Wednesday afternoon. Phillips is being held in the Grenada County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

Deputies with the Grenada County Sheriff's Office assist investigators with the Grenada Police Department at the scene of a shooting Monday afternoon on Dean Drive.
A shooting just before 1 p.m. Monday on Dean Drive left two people injured and drew a heavy response from multiple law enforcement agencies in the heart of the city.
Officers from the Grenada Police Department and deputies from the Grenada County Sheriff’s Office converged on the scene where they documented and recovered numerous bullets and shell casings scattered in the area. MedStat Emergency Medical Services personnel also responded to the scene. Both victims were taken from the scene for treatment.

Following a 4-1 vote Tuesday night, the Grenada School District Board of Trustees voted to accept the recommendation to hire Brooks Oakley as Grenada High School’s new football coach. Oakley replaces Michael Fair, who resigned last month to take head coaching position at South Panola High School.

Average gasoline prices in Mississippi have fallen 0.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.38/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 2,014 stations in Mississippi. Prices in Mississippi are 1.7 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 25.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has decreased 4.2 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $3.585 per gallon.

A large power pole that toppled during Winter Storm Fern partially blocks the entrance to the Grenada School District’s elementary school campus. It remained down as well as power lines early Sunday morning.
Grenada School District officials announced at 2:30 p.m. Sunday that all District schools will remain closed Monday, Feb. 2, and Tuesday, Feb. 3, extending an already week-long shutdown after Winter Storm Fern coated Grenada County in ice and crippled much of its electrical infrastructure. The decision comes as crews continue working to repair extensive damage to power lines and poles at the District’s elementary school campus where service had not been restored by Sunday morning.

The passing of time may soften the sharp edges of grief, and others may step in to fill the gap left behind — someone will no doubt make Momma’s favorite cornbread casserole this year. Still, there’s often an ache, a longing to keep her memory alive at family gatherings. Not only for those who remember her well and were shaped by her love, but also for the highchair generation who only know her through stories.
