A residential fire claimed the lives of three people in Arkabutla, according to authorities in Tate County.
Tate County Fire Coordinator Jim Huestis said the fire occurred Tuesday, Jan. 27 in the 2500 block of Bend Road at approximately 11:58 a.m.

Senatobia and Tate County schools, like most schools across the state, are making decisions on holding classes as needed after this week's frigid and icy winter storm.
Senatobia Municipal School District said its schools will be closed for the rest of the week.
Tate County Schools will be closed Wednesday, and school officials have said they will post a decision regarding Thursday classes on Wednesday by 6 pm.

Approximately four inches of frozen, pebbly snow has fallen across Tate County and city and county officials are urging the community to stay home and stay warm.
Temperatures were in the mid 20-degrees Saturday afternoon with more frozen rain expected today, tonight and Sunday. A low of 11-degrees is forecast for Monday morning.
Tate County, Senatobia and Coldwater have declared a State of Emergency and, again people are asked to stay home unless there is an emergency or a work requirement.

Tate County leaders are on board with a proposal to allow sheriffs’ deputies to use radar guns – a tool currently banned for county law enforcement – to help curb dangerous driving on rural roads.
Supervisors signed a local resolution presented by Sheriff Luke Shepherd at their meeting Monday, Jan. 5 asking Mississippi legislators to reconsider a law that prohibits sheriff’s office personnel across the state from using radar to deter speeding.

Coach Ivey Dixon left this world peacefully on January 19, 2026 surrounded by his loving family at home.
Coach Dixon was born on February 8, 1952 in Louisiana, the son of Reverend WT Dixon, Jr. and Eloise Smith Dixon.
Growing up he developed a strong work ethic and a deep love for his family. He shared a close bond with his cousins Webb Lampley and Libby Lee Lampley, and nephews Will Dixon, John Dixon, and David Dixon. After graduating from college with a degree in education he dedicated 28 years to teaching and coaching.

It was a banner weekend for the Rangers at the 2026 UCA/UDA National Championships, bringing home four national titles at the competition in Orlando, Fla.
SENATOBIA – It was a stellar weekend for the Northwest Mississippi Community College cheer and dance teams, bringing home four national championships and finishing no lower than third in the nation in all of their events at the 2026 UCA/UDA College Nationals.
It is now the tenth total title in the Northwest cheer program history going back to 1999, with nine of those titles coming under current Head Coach Brandon Casey, and the third title for the dance program under Head Coach Patrice Christian.

Gerald Franklin Crawford (better known as “Crash”), age 83, of the Looxahoma community passed from this life to his eternal home on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at Iris Cove Nursing and Rehab in Memphis, after battling cancer.

Construction crews were busy Monday putting a new roof on top of Highland Hills Medical Center. The Senatobia hospital is in line to receive federal funds via the state under the Rural Health Transformation Program to help with facility improvements and workforce development.
The medicine of healthcare is complex and so is the business of healthcare and its relationship to local, state and federal government.
President Donald Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ – the federal budget bill for 2026 – allocated $50 billion over five years to be divided up among 50 states under the Rural Health Transformation Program and Mississippi’s portion for 2026 is $205,907,220. But details of how that will filter down to Highland Hills, Tate County’s hospital in Senatobia, remain to be seen.

Car tag fees in Mississippi are the second-highest in the United States, often exceeding $1,000 annually, and remain increasingly difficult for the average taxpayer to predict according to a new report from the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor.
“Taxpayers all over the state have talked to me about how complex and expensive it is to get a car tag,” said Auditor Shad White. “They complain for a good reason: it’s hard for the average family to know how and why that bill is so big when they pay it.”

In the first week of the 2026 legislative session, four bills were filed to ban cell phone use in Mississippi public school classrooms.
Two of those bills came out of the Senate, where SB 2099 was authored by State Senator Briggs Hopson (R) and SB 2069 was authored by Senator Dennis DeBar (R).
