A high-speed chase through Madison Parish last week ended with a wrecked vehicle and three of the car’s four occupants in jail on drug and weapons charges.
Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office officials said the chase began Mon. Nov. 28, when an MPSO deputy spotted an orange Dodge Charger traveling at a high rate of speed along Interstate 20.
“The deputy’s radar indicated the car was traveling at 96 miles per hour,” an MPSO official said. “The deputy pulled the Charger over onto the shoulder. The Charger then sped away with the deputy in pursuit.”
Officials said the Charger took exit 173 into Richmond, where the driver lost control and the vehicle flipped several times before coming to rest in a field.
“Deputies were able to extract some of the passengers out of the vehicle,” officials said. “One passenger, who was injured, had to be removed by EMS. Numerous weapons and various narcotics were located inside the Charger after a search warrant was obtained.”
Three of the vehicle’s four occupants were taken into custody by deputies and booked into the Madison Parish Jail, including the driver, 23-year-old Keanu Spann and occupants, 22-year-old Jesus Santiago and 19-year-old Edgar Hernandez. A fourth person was transported to a local hospital to be treated with what officials called “serious” injuries.
Officials said Spann, Santiago and Hernandez are all of West Palm Beach, Fla., adding Spann and Hernandez are convicted felons.
Spann was booked on charges of speeding; careless operation; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; illegal carrying of a weapon with CDS; flight from an officer; possession of schedule II (cocaine) with intent to sell; and possession of schedule I (marijuana). Santiago was charged with illegal carrying of a weapon with CDS; possession of schedule I (marijuana); and possession of schedule II (cocaine) with intent to sell. Hernandez was charged with illegal carrying of a weapon with CDS; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; possession of schedule I (marijuana); and possession of schedule II (cocaine) with intent to sell.
