Qualifying has ended for municipal offices in Tallulah and for Justice of the Peace in Madison Parish, setting the ballot for the May 16 election.
District 5 Councilman Toriano Wells was re-elected after qualifying as the only candidate for the District 5 seat. Jonathan Mark Federick was also elected without opposition after qualifying as the only candidate for Justice of the Peace for Districts 1 and 3.

Delta Community Action Association, Inc. will accept applications Friday for the 2026 Heating Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for Madison Parish residents
Applications will be taken from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Tallulah Community Center, 800 N. Beech St., Tallulah
The program assists families and senior citizens with heating-related energy costs. Funds may be used for electricity, gas or propane
Officials said applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis with limited slots available per day

Northeast Delta Human Services Authority (NEDHSA) has announced an unprecedented collaboration with the Louisiana Assistive Technology Access Network (LATAN) to increase awareness of and access to assistive technologies throughout Northeast Louisiana. The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by NEDHSA Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer and LATAN President and CEO Yakima Black.

Voters will elect one candidate for Public Service Commission District 5 from the Democratic Party and one candidate for Public Service Commission District 5 from the Republican Party.
One Justice of the Peace will be elected to serve Districts 1 and 3.
In the City of Tallulah, voters will elect a mayor and a chief of police.

A truck hit the Tallulah Water Service building on Thursday, Feb. 5, causing damage that forced the office to close for several days, according to officials.
The office will be closed for the remainder of Thursday and all day Friday. It is scheduled to reopen Monday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m. Water payments will be accepted only through the side window. The lobby will remain closed while repairs are made.

The US Route 80 West bridge over Panola Bayou in Madison Parish has been closed due to major damage, according to parish and state officials.
Madison Parish Sheriff Chad Ezell first announced the closure by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) on Tuesday, Feb. 3. The bridge is located 1.3 miles west of US 65 and just past the Louisiana Transitional Center for Women.

Eight inmates escaped Thursday night from the River Bend Detention Center in Lake Providence, Louisiana and were captured by Friday night.
The East Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Office deployed its full force and requested assistance from surrounding agencies to search for the escapees. Law enforcement agencies across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas participated in the search.

An ice storm warning and an extreme cold watch have been issued for Madison Parish as winter weather is forecast to impact northeast Louisiana this weekend and early next week.
The National Weather Service Jackson said an ice storm warning is in effect for Madison Parish from noon Saturday through 6 p.m. Sunday. Forecasters said ice accumulations of up to three quarters of an inch are possible, with additional sleet accumulation possible. The weather service said power outages and tree damage are expected and that travel could be impossible due to ice-covered roads.

The National Weather Service Jackson has issued a winter storm watch for portions of northeast Louisiana and Mississippi, with the alert remaining in effect from late Friday night through Sunday evening.
The watch includes Madison, Franklin, Catahoula, and Tensas parishes in Louisiana, along with multiple counties in central, east central, northeast, southwest, and west central Mississippi.

Patterson Water Group reported progress at its water treatment plant in Tallulah following recent construction work at the site.
In a statement, the company said crews have set up a new sludge pond as part of ongoing operations at the plant. Officials said the pond is used in the treatment process to manage solids and support system functions.
“This is an important part of the treatment process that helps manage solids, protects equipment, and keeps operations running smoothly,” the company said in a social media post.
