The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal (SFM) is investigating two separate residential fires over the weekend that tragically claimed the lives of four individuals.
The first incident occurred on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at approximately 7:17 a.m. in the 100 block of Lymon Lane in Hessmer. The Hessmer Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, where three people, a 58-year-old man, a 47-year-old woman, and a 10-year-old boy, were found deceased. Investigators confirmed that the home did not have a working smoke alarm.
The second fire happened shortly before midnight on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in the 1100 block of Grinage Street in Houma. One victim, a 70-year-old man, was killed, while his brother suffered serious fire-related injuries and was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans for treatment. The presence of smoke alarms in this home is currently unknown. The Houma Fire Department responded to the scene.
Both fire departments requested investigative support from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, which is actively working to determine the origin and cause of each fire.
“These tragedies are heartbreaking and often preventable,” said DPS Principal Assistant Chief Bryan J. Adams. “We urge every Louisiana resident to ensure their homes are protected with working smoke alarms.”
To assist with prevention, the Operation Save-A-Life program offers free smoke alarms and professional installation for Louisiana residents in need.
