Residents who plan to vote in the May 16 election must be registered by April 15, 2026, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State.
Louisiana citizens may register to vote if they are at least 18 years old by Election Day, are U.S. citizens and meet residency requirements. Individuals who are 16 or 17 may pre-register and will be eligible to vote once they turn 18.
Voters may register online through the GeauxVote system at the secretary of state’s website. Online registration requires a valid Louisiana driver’s license or special identification card issued by the state Office of Motor Vehicles.
Residents may also register in person at their parish registrar of voters office, at Office of Motor Vehicles locations, at public assistance agencies and at armed forces recruitment offices.
Mail-in registration is available by completing a voter registration application and submitting it to the parish registrar of voters. Paper applications must be received or postmarked by the April 15 deadline to qualify for the May 16 election.
Voters who have moved or changed their name should update their registration before the deadline to ensure their information is current.
Election Day is May 16. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters in line by 8 p.m. may cast a ballot.
Residents may check their registration status, find their polling location and view sample ballots through the GeauxVote portal or by contacting their parish registrar of voters.
