The Tallulah Academy Trojans are moving on to the South State Championship after notching two wins this week over the Franklin Academy Cougars in the 2021 MAIS 1A playoffs.
The Trojans entered the post-season as the top-ranked 1A team and showed the Cougars why, knocking FA off 12-2 Monday on the road in Winnsboro.
The Trojans and Cougars met again in the second game of the best 2-of-3 series Thursday in Tallulah at Robert Kivett, Sr. Sports Complex, where TA rolled to a 9-3 victory.
TA jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning, finishing it off with a score from Marsh Wood off an RBI from Paul Michael Machen. The Trojans added to its lead in the bottom of the second and third innings with an RBI from Kayne Romero driving in Carter Sullivan in the second and Hayes Hopkins scoring in the third, this time with Sullivan responsible for the RBI, to lead 6-1.
The Trojans extended its lead again in the bottom of the fourth inning, with a home run form Wood giving TA a 7-1 lead. The Cougars mounted a bit of a comeback in the fifth, driving in two runs to close the scoring gap to four, trailing TA 7-3.
Dee Morgan stepped in on the mound in relief of Romero to finish off the inning defensively for the Trojans and TA added two more scores on offense, with a single from Todd Etheridge driving in Hopkins and Sullivan for the 9-3 lead. Morgan would go on to strike out three straight Cougars batters in the sixth inning, solidifying the TA win.
With Thursday’s victory over FA, the Trojans move on to the championship in a matchup with PVA Tuesday in Bastrop.
