Voting will be held Tues., Nov. 8, in Madison Parish for several local races, two state races for the U.S. Senate and eight proposed constitutional amendments.
\The ballot will include a U.S. Senator race, the seat for U.S. Representative for the 5th Congressional District, eight proposed amendments to the state constitution, candidates for Village of Richmond alderman as well as Madison Parish School Board seats in districts 3,4,5,7 and 8.
Appearing on the ballot in the race for United States Senator will be Beryl A. Billiot (no party), Gary Chambers Jr. (D), Devin Lance Graham (R), "Xan" John (other), Incumbent John Kennedy (R), W. Thomas La Fontaine Olson (no party), Bradley McMorris (Independent), MV "Vinny" Mendoza (D), "Luke" Mixon (D), Salvador P. Rodriguez (D), Aaron C. Sigler (Libertarian), Syrita Steib (D) and Thomas Wenn (other).
Appearing on the ballot in the race for U.S. Representative for the 5th Congressional District will be Oscar "Omar" Dantzler (D), Allen Guillory (R), Walter Earl Huff (D), Incumbent Julia Letlow (R) and Hunter Pullen (R).
In the race for Madison Parish School Board, District 3, Artis Brown (D) and former MPSB member Eddie Fountain (D) will face off; vying for MPSB, District 4, will be Incumbent Sharon Jackson (D) and Kathy Gultery (no party); in District 5, Ronnie Groves (D) and former MPSB member Paula Hamilton (no party) will face Incumbent Darrell Sims (D); in District 7, Glenda Minor-Douglas (D) will face Incumbent Lisa Johnson (D); in District 8, Shante' Everette (D) will face Incumbent "Rita" Hargrave (R).
Running for seats as an alderman for the Village of Richmond are Incumbent Walter Cobb (R), "Curt" Collins (R), Incumbent Margaret Leoty (R), Lamar Walters (R) and Bart Wood (R).
Proposed amendments include: 1. to increase to 65 percent the cap on the amount of monies in certain state funds that may be invested in stocks; 2. to expand certain property tax exemptions for property on which the homestead exemption is claimed for certain veterans with disabilities; 3. to allow classified civil service employees to support the election to public office of members of their own families; 4. to allow local governments to waive water charges that are the result of damage to the water system not caused by the customer; 5. to allow the levying of a lower millage rate by a local taxing authority while maintaining the authority's ability to adjust to the current authorized millage rate; 6. to limit the amount of an increase in the assessed value of residential property subject to the homestead exemption in Orleans Parish following reappraisal at ten percent of the property's assessed value in the previous year; 7. to prohibit the use of involuntary servitude except as it applies to the otherwise lawful administration of criminal justice; 8. to remove the requirement that homeowners who are permanently totally disabled must annually re-certify their income to keep their special assessment level on their residences for property tax purposes.
