Tallulah Academy will face DeSoto School in the MAIS football championship Friday morning in Jackson, Mississippi, continuing a postseason run that players and coaches described as rooted in team unity and community support.
The Trojans will play the DeSoto Thunderbirds at 10:30 a.m. at Jackson Academy. The matchup follows Tallulah’s 56–32 playoff win over Columbus Christian Academy, which pushed the Trojans to an 8–5 record. DeSoto enters at 10–2 after a 42–0 win over Calhoun Academy.
Fans unable to attend can watch the livestream at MAIS Network’s website by selecting Tallulah Academy and choosing “Watch Live.”
At the MAIS Media Day, Tallulah head coach Ryan Williams said the team’s progress came from players staying committed as the season unfolded. Williams, in his first first year as head coach, said his players “believed in the process” and “answered the call,” crediting their effort for reaching the title game.
Williams said the turning point came during the Briarfield playoff game, when Tallulah rallied after trailing at halftime. He said the comeback showed the players that their goal was within reach.
Players said the team began to improve once they started playing together rather than individually. Senior players also noted a strong response from the Tallulah community, pointing to support at games and at school events leading up to the championship.
Williams said Tallulah expects a physical game from DeSoto, which is making its fifth straight championship appearance. He said his team is prepared for the challenge and will focus on staying grounded during the week.
One adjustment for Tallulah will be playing on turf, something the team does not have at home. Williams said Madison High School allowed the Trojans to practice on its turf this week, which he said reflects the support Tallulah has received across the parish.
Madison High School principal Perry Revels said the school was glad to assist Tallulah Academy as they prepare for the title game.
“Madison High School proudly extends a heartfelt hand of support to Tallulah Academy as they prepare for their upcoming championship game. We are pleased to offer the use of our turfed facility to ensure their athletes have the proper footing needed for safe and effective execution of plays. We wish the Trojans the very best in their playoff run—Geaux, Trojans!”
Tallulah brought seniors Jon Fortenberry, Owen Martin, Tripp Gayle and Charlie Vinning to Media Day. Williams said he wants his players to “enjoy every aspect” of the championship experience while keeping their focus on the game. “At the end of the day, it’s a game,” he said. “Enjoy the moment, but don’t make more of it than what it is.”
Kickoff is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Jackson Academy. The championship stream will be available at: maisnetwork.org/mais_football_championships_2025.php
