BATON ROUGE – State Treasurer John M. Schroder invites the public to “Money Moves Baton Rouge,” a day to learn practical approaches to personal and family finances on Saturday, Nov. 12. The free event will run from 9 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. at Baton Rouge Community College’s Magnolia Library and Performing Arts Pavilion.
“This financial literacy conference is aimed at helping attendees improve their families’ lives through better financial planning and investing,” said Schroder. “I’m happy to promote this event for residents from all walks of life who will benefit from having the financial skills needed to meet their families’ current, future, and emergency needs.”
Unclaimed Property staff members of Louisiana Treasury will host a booth where attendees can check if they have any unclaimed property owed to them throughout the duration of the conference. If so, they will be able to make their claim and a check will be mailed to them in the amount they are owed. Common examples of unclaimed property include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, stock dividends, and utility deposit refunds. When checks are not cashed, accounts go dormant, or the company cannot locate the owner, the funds are sent to the Treasury for safekeeping until the appropriate owners can be found.
“One out of six Louisiana residents has unclaimed property owed to them,” Schroder added. “With the rising cost of everyday needs like groceries and gas, finding your name on the list could be a welcome surprise at a crucial time.”
According to Paul Maaussen, general manager of event host WRKF 89.3 Baton Rouge public radio, Money Moves Baton Rouge will present attendees with information they can trust from knowledgeable national and local professionals in the financial world. The conference’s keynote presentation includes Times-Picayune/Advocate business reporter Stephanie Riegel interviewing Senior Professor of Finance Peter Ricchuiti of Tulane University’s A.B. Freeman School of Business. They will discuss how investing in yourself is always the best investment.
Conference speakers are dedicated to providing impartial education and information to attendees without promoting any companies, products, or services. Session topics will cover a range of information on making responsible financial decisions through three tracks, including:
- The ABCs of Successful Money Management – Practical Tools and Rules;
- Purse Strings – Important Financial Decisions Are in Your Hands;
