SHREVEPORT, La. – The American Cancer Society has awarded a grant to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport – Feist-Weiller Cancer Center to address the transportation needs of cancer patients in North Louisiana. These grants are available to health systems, treatment centers and community organizations in select communities through an application process, and they focus on addressing unmet transportation needs of cancer patients, particularly vulnerable populations experiencing an unequal burden of cancer.
The $7,500 patient transportation grant is in addition to a previous grant award in the amount of $30,000. This funding allows patients at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center to continue their care without the burden of travel and transportation costs, a large concern among its patients. Since 2020, the American Cancer Society transportation grant has allowed Feist-Weiller Cancer Center to provide 8,899 rides to 1,103 patients traveling from over 50 parishes and counties in Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas, ensuring everyone in the area has access to quality care and cancer treatment.
“Feist-Weiller Cancer Center serves an area with immense need and a high incidence of cancer,” says Director Dr. Sarah Thayer. “Transportation programs are vital to help patients get the treatments they need and deserve.”
