The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal (SFM) is investigating a residential fire in Bastrop that resulted in the death of a teenager this week.
Shortly before 6 a.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, the Bastrop Fire Department responded to a home in the 900 block of Arant Street in Bastrop after receiving reports of a fire. Firefighters arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames. A 16-year-old male died as a result of the fire. Seven other occupants of the home escaped the fire unharmed.
SFM investigators determined that the home lacked a working smoke alarm. The cause and origin of the fire remain under active investigation.
The SFM is using this tragedy to again urge Louisiana residents to make sure they have functioning smoke alarms in their homes.
“Fire-related fatalities are heartbreaking, especially because so many are preventable,” said DPS Principal Assistant, Chief Bryan J. Adams. “A working smoke alarm gives families the critical early warning they need to get out safely. Through our Operation Save-A-Life program, we remain dedicated to providing free smoke alarms and installation services so every home has this vital layer of protection.”
