The more I watch college football this year, the more I see the same story playing out.
Through the first, let's say four weeks, things sure looked a lot different than in years past. SEC teams that don't normally lose at all, including Bama and LSU, were losing early in the year.
Meanwhile, SEC teams that don't usually win, looking at you Missouri and Kentucky, were cruising right along. At the same time, teams in other conferences not named Ohio State or Michigan, were looking like really serious contenders.
Now, some of that stuff still rings true seven weeks in: Teams like Oklahoma and FSU - ones that haven't been dominant in a while - are still undefeated and look like they could make legitimate runs at conference titles, which would surely earn them spots in the playoffs. Meanwhile, teams like Missouri and Texas are sitting relatively pretty with just one loss.
So, it looks like a year of real parity in college football. That is until it doesn't.
This is the time of year when the real powerhouses of the sport typically hit their strides and remind us all who is really in charge. Last year LSU was counted out early, only to rally and make it to the SEC championship as kings of the West. Of course, they were promptly dismantled by the kings of the East - and of all college football - Georgia.
This year, LSU lost twice pretty early and may trip over Bama in November, but Bama making it to Atlanta isn't exactly new news either.
All I'm saying is it is easy - and a lot of fun - to get caught up in the flavor of the week. Just ask Coach Prime. But, it can very quickly come unraveled. Rome, or more aptly Athens, wasn't built in a day and it won't fall in one, either.
My money is on Bama or Georgia or winning the SEC, as in years past. And that team will get automatic entry into the CFP. If that team is Bama, Georgia is probably in, too. And I'm betting on either, or both, teams making short work of an undefeated FSU, Oklahoma, Ohio State, or Michigan.
History - very recent history - is on my side, and the side of the SEC, to win it all again in 2023.
