It was after midnight Saturday night - or Sunday morning, I guess - and I was still pondering the state of Alabama football while driving back from Starkville, where Bama continued to look more like itself in a 40-17 win on the road at Mississippi State. That’s when I had to make a phone call to make sure I had heard ESPN radio correctly. LSU lost to Ole Miss? Shocking as that one was, it was far from the only surprise the SEC gave us Saturday.
Before my son Colin and I ever pointed the car toward Starkvegas Saturday, we watched a good bit of Texas A&M versus Arkansas and I was a little surprised to see the Aggies pull that one off. Max Johnson, the LSU transfer, is more than capable of being the starting QB, but after the hogs pushed LSU to the final minutes last week, my money was on them.
Elsewhere in the SEC, I wasn’t as surprised as I should have been that Kentucky rolled over Florida. Does that mean Kentucky is for real this year or that Florida is doing its best A&M impersonation by continuing to underwhelm. I think it might be both.
Mizzou managed to stay unbeaten, albeit with a win over Vandy. I’m always glad to see my Tigers do well, but I think we all know there’s a shelf life on that unblemished record. The Tigers aren’t built to make it back to Atlanta quite yet.
Which brings us to the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs, who continue to struggle early in games, but let those struggles last almost four quarters on the road at Auburn. Now, I can’t say I’m ever excited to see Auburn win, but I may have been secretly hoping they would expose Georgia for a team that has lost a lot of talent and is playing a mediocre schedule in 2023. The Dawgs won by 7. Is Auburn improved? Is Georgia falling off? Stay tuned. There’s a lot more to watch.
