As Walmart and various retail stores and websites have kicked off their Black Friday deals, and with the use of online sales to soar due to COVID-19, package thefts will be on the rise this holiday season. Madison Parish Sheriff Sammie Byrd wants to remind the public when ordering packages online and having them delivered, be careful of having them delivered when no one is home to accept the packages. “When the packages sit outside it invites someone to walk up and steal the packages,” said Byrd.
Here are some helpful tips for preventing package theft: schedule deliveries when someone is home to receive them; adjust security-camera angles so that they are not too high, capturing visitors’ faces and preventing them from easily obscuring themselves with a hood or hat; use cameras that record at least in 1080p resolution and have nighttime function; use tracking numbers and email and text notifications to closely monitor when packages arrive; utilize a postal drop for receiving packages and locked mailboxes; connect with neighbors to make arrangements to sign for and receive each other’s packages when the other is not home.
