Traveling from town to town during a political season can be very eye-opening. In many places you will see people outside of buildings, standing on sidewalks during the heat of the day, waving at all of the vehicles passing by, while holding up a sign displaying a name of a person they are wanting you to vote for. This is campaigning in the purest form. It is a time that individuals are reaching out to other individuals asking them to vote for a particular person or come on their side of a campaign issue.
Many of the voting precincts are now being held in churches. I have seen churches that have big parking lots with the entrance of the church and voting booth several hundred feet away from the signs. There are laws that will only allow politicking within so many feet of the entrance to the voting booth. The streets are lined with signs and people on these church grounds are soliciting voters to come inside and vote for their particular candidate. In many instances there are canopies with chairs and coolers under them so the workers can sit and rest or become refreshed with drink to continue their job of campaigning throughout the day. Some workers will stand on the grounds of that church for 12 hours straight to help the person they are campaigning for.
Politics is nothing new. When one reads the Bible they will find political situations from Genesis to Revelation. Just as in the times of today we see political situations that are unfriendly, unfair, and unjust, so were these situations happening in Old Testament times also. The New Testament tells of how Jesus was politically crucified because of who He was and is. The Apostle Paul and many others in the New Testament were tortured and killed because of their belief and witnessing for Jesus.
Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver because he was caught up in the politics of that day. Not all politics are bad but whoever wins the office will be pulled at by Satan from every direction. We are told in Matthew 27:15 about Jesus being taken before Pilate and Pilate’s wife sending him a message saying; “While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him saying, “Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.”” Politics can be both good and bad depending on who you are and what you are expecting from holding office.
I guess what bothers me most about the political signs and people lining the streets and sidewalks of a church yard is why do we not do this for our Lord and Savior? Why do we not stand in the yard and hold up signs saying “Come in and meet Jesus and know Him personally.” Do you really think anyone would stand in the hot sun for 12 hours doing this?
All of us are human and we see and do things that are beneficial for us here on earth. Most of the time we are not thinking of our heavenly home not realizing that life is only a vapor as our time on earth expires. For those of us that know Jesus personally will spend eternity with Him and there will be no more politics to face. He is our King, our Counselor, our Heavenly Father, and our Everything!
Why do we not give more time working for Him while we are living our short life on earth?
