In this edition of the Madison Journal, I will pay tribute to another spectacular relative whom will be forever missed and truly loved. A mild-mannered, quiet, as kept young gentleman who shared some of the same hobbies as I had several years ago (drawing) all of his days. This young man whom I’m speaking of is my cousin Jalen N’Shaun. Believe me readers when I say that my cousin Jalen (BKA “Coooter” and “Jay Bird”) was very unique. I mean just that! Jalen was unique. From the time Jalen came on the scene until our awesome Heavenly Father called him home on July 30th, Jalen left a very powerful mark on the lives of our Thomas family which will never be erased.
My cousin’s homegoing service on Friday, August 18th at the East Star Baptist Church was an awesome send off. Pastor Tommy Watson Sr. and the East Star Baptist Church Praise Team did a superb job singing as angels sing in the NewJerusalem above! My good friend Minister Albert Williamson played his part great opening up the service with scripture and prayer. Loved ones and friends who gave reflections on my cousin’s life was truly a blessing especially that Jack of all Trades brother of mine, Karmoth James! Kenny shared with us how when cousin Jalen paid visits to my family house on the Middle Block, it was never a dull moment for us. From enjoying my grandmother’s delicious cooking, to running around our house from room to room (with his ever so handsome dimples), to flipping the television set in the kitchen so much until it had to be replaced!
One remarkable story which my brother shared was Jalen’s extraordinary drawing talent (which surpassed mine!) During the holiday season years ago my brother did the unthinkable for cousin Jalen for a Christmas gift (but in the end, it made all the sense in the world!) My brother went out and bought Jalen some Xerox paper and markers! After getting this from my brother my cousin Jalen went straight to his room. All of my loved ones present asked, “What happened to Jalen?” He was in his room being the fantastic artist he was! As a matter of fact, my brother shared how Jalen drew the logo of all 32 teams in the National Football League! Wow! Whatta man! Jalen’s godfather Pastor Leroy Robinson Sr. of Christian Life Community Ministry gave some inspiring, powerful eulogy at this gathering.
Before I forget, I have to share this. Having those cute dimples, readers, you couldn’t help but be handsome (because it runs in my immediate family!)
Thank you’s go to the Michael Beckwith Golden Gate Funeral Home for the excellent job they gave. Also thank you to the fine staff with Pastor Matilda Watson and Marie’s Family Sitters and Healthcare for the very tasty meal which was provided for us to enjoy. Special recognition to that fabulous Reuben McCall High class of 1993. My cousin Mya Harris, Shontay Douglas, and “Chee Chee” Watson for their love and support to my cousin Nikki and her daughters Jessica and Shakina. But most of all, thank you cousin Jalen for all of the love and joy which you spread to us (as well as all those you came across here and there!) And do tell Kathy and Joe B. Thomas, Sr. that I said hello! And I hope to see you all again soon. Rest in peace!
