Madison Parish Tourism Director Tina Johnson was on hand at Monday’s regular Madison Parish Police Jury (MPPJ) meeting, where she outlined plans for this year’s local celebrations of the Juneteenth holiday.
The MPPJ during Monday’s meeting approved a $500 donation toward the scheduled events and Johnson said those funds will be joined with $700, as well as additional help, already pledged by the City of Tallulah toward the festivities.
Johnson was joined by Xiomara Bell, who gave jurors an overview of what locals can expect from this year’s festivities. The schedule includes: Thurs., June 15 - Who Owns the Board?: Financial Freedom for Youth - 2 p.m.at Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church, located at 316 North Walnut Street in Tallulah; The Freedom Sweep: Citywide Cleanup - 5:30 p.m., with registration for organizations beginning at 5 p.m. at the fairground slab (corner of North Cedar and Van Zelfden streets); Fri., June 16 - Freedom Trails: Tallulah’s Black History Scavenger Hunt at 8 a.m., with registration beginning at 7:15 a.m.at the Tallulah-Madison Community Center, located at 800 Beech Street in Tallulah; At the Feet of the Elders: Tales of Freedom at noon at the Madison Parish Library, located at 403 North Mulberry Street in Tallulah; Fruit of the Village: Honoring Freedom Fighters at 7 p.m. at the Tallulah-Madison Community Center; Sat., June 17 - A Parade to Freedom at 10 a.m., with formation beginning at 8 a.m., at Tallulah Elementary School, located at 1100 Johnson Street; Black Wall Street Freedom isn’t Free at 12:30 p.m. at the Tallulah-Madison Community Center; The Freedom Cafe: And Ode to Black Love at 7 p.m. at C.
