Summer in Northeast Louisiana brings long days, warm weather, and—if we’re being honest—a lot of screen time. If your kids are spending more time on devices than outdoors or learning something new, you’re not alone. But this season is a great chance to help them unplug and reconnect with the world around them.
Here’s how you can take the lead and guide your children toward more meaningful, educational, and fun experiences this summer—right here in our region.
- Set Healthy Screen Habits at Home
Start by creating a simple family media plan. It doesn’t have to be strict, just consistent.
Tech-free zones: Keep devices out of bedrooms and off the dinner table.
Daily limits: Set a reasonable amount of screen time and stick to it.
Be an example: Let your kids see you choose a book, a walk, or a conversation over scrolling.
- Replace Screens with Real-Life Experiences
Kids don’t just need less screen time—they need something better to do. Here are some ideas that work especially well in Northeast Louisiana:
Explore the outdoors: Visit Lake Bruin State Park in Tensas parish, go fishing at Lake D’Arbonne in Union parish, or take a nature walk along the river at Vidalia Landing Riverfront Park in Concordia parish.
Get involved at your local library: Libraries in all Northeast LA parishes offer summer reading programs, craft days, and STEM activities. Several of our local libraries have story walks that families can stroll along together – make sure to bring some water to stay hydrated!
Volunteer as a family: Helping at a local food pantry or animal shelter teaches compassion and responsibility.
- Connect with Your Local LSU AgCenter Extension Office
One of the best resources for educational and hands-on summer activities is your parish LSU AgCenter Extension office.
4-H programs that build leadership, citizenship, and life skills.
KidChef and TeenChef Camps, where kids learn cooking, nutrition, and kitchen safety in a fun, interactive setting.
Nutrition and Community Health programs that encourage healthy habits and active living.
Livestock Workshops & Activities – check with your local Ag or 4-H Agent to find out about workshops and trainings with livestock.
These programs are designed to be engaging, educational, and screen-free—perfect for summer.
- Make Learning Part of the Daily Routine
You don’t need a classroom to keep your child learning.
Daily reading time: Let them choose books that match their interests.
Educational games and puzzles: Board games, scavenger hunts, and building kits are great alternatives to screens.
Cooking together: Turn meal prep into a fun lesson in math, science, and teamwork. Focus on Louisiana cuisine and culinary culture for some nourishing family fun time.
Celebrating small wins is the key to success. Start with small changes and work toward more significant and sustainable change in your family’s routine. Unplugging doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Celebrate the little victories—like a full day without screens, finishing a book, or trying a new recipe. Keep the focus on connection, not perfection. This summer, let’s help our kids rediscover the joy of being present, curious, and creative. Northeast Louisiana is full of opportunities to make that happen—and it starts with you.
