SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — Police in northwest Louisiana are investigating the death of a city jail inmate who died nearly a week after injuring his head in a fall.
Shreveport Police Deputy Chief Antoine White held a news conference on Wednesday to say that the 34-year-old man died on April 11 at the hospital where he was taken after a fall on April 6, news outlets reported.
The fall apparently was caused by a medical problem and the man’s head injury appeared minor, White said.
“He was alert and speaking to jailers and transporting officers and medical staff at the hospital,” White said. “He remained hospitalized and his condition was reportedly improving" for days.
The man's condition began deteriorating April 9, he said.
White did not identify the man but did say he was arrested April 4 for allegedly violating a protective order.
“The cause of death is unknown at this time and we are awaiting the autopsy results,” White said. “We have secured video from the jail and we do have the matter under investigation.”
