Gov. Jeff Landry has called a special election to fill a vacancy in the Madison Parish Justice of the Peace office for Districts 1 and 3 following the resignation of Kathy Grady.
Grady resigned effective Dec. 31, 2025, creating a vacancy with more than 12 months remaining in the term. Under Louisiana law, the governor is required to call a special election to fill the unexpired term.
According to the governor’s proclamation, a special primary election will be held Saturday, May 16, 2026. If needed, a general election will be held Saturday, June 27, 2026. The election will be conducted throughout the jurisdiction of Justice of the Peace Districts 1 and 3 in Madison Parish.
Candidates seeking the office must qualify by filing a notice of candidacy with the appropriate election official between Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2026, and Friday, Feb. 13, 2026. Qualifying candidates must submit either a qualifying fee or a nominating petition as provided by state law.
The election will be conducted under the provisions of the Louisiana Election Code. The Secretary of State, parish election officials and other officials involved in election administration are authorized to carry out all duties required to conduct the election and certify the results.
The proclamation was issued Dec. 29, 2025, in Baton Rouge and is signed by Gov. Jeff Landry and Secretary of State Nancy Landry.
