The Madison Parish 4-H held its Parish Cookery competition with 10 dishes entered across seven categories. Judges evaluated each entry based on presentation and taste. Madyson Copes earned Best of Show for her dirty rice in the Main Dish Beef category.
Other winners included Hartlea Johnston, who placed first in the Egg, Rice Main Dish, Pecan, Sweet Potato, Chicken, and Quick and Easy Beef categories. Finely Hale placed second in the Egg category, followed by Addison in third. Madyson also took second in Rice Main Dish.
During judging, participants took part in a Sweet Potato Spotlight activity, where they tasted baked sweet potatoes and used the remainder to make pie filling in a bag. Organizers said the exercise gave participants an opportunity to learn more about cooking with locally grown produce.
A second Parish Cookery event is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 24, at 10 a.m. at the Richmond Civic Center. Participants from that event will have the opportunity to qualify for the Area Cookery in Winnsboro.
