Madison Parish 4-H members took part in multiple competitions and events last week at the Northeast Louisiana Livestock Show, competing in poultry and beef shows, assisting at the donors dinner and participating in community activities tied to the annual event.
Madison Parish 4-H exhibitors were involved over the course of the show. The group attended the donors dinner, where they helped serve donors and spoke with them about their livestock projects. Exhibitors also showed their animals and answered questions during the event.
Emmalynn competed in the poultry show and placed second in intermediate showmanship. When the poultry show concluded, she recorded multiple additional results. She won Grand Champion for a Buff Orpington cock in the large fowl division. She also earned Reserve Champion honors for a Rhode Island Red hen in the large fowl division, a Rhode Island Red bantam cock, and intermediate showmanship. Emmalynn Jacobs also placed first and second in several other poultry divisions during the show.
Callie Marsh
Callie Marsh and Carter Marsh represented Madison Parish 4-H in the beef cattle show. Both spent time preparing their cattle ahead of the competition.
Callie Marsh showed a shorthorn heifer named Fancy. She won first place in her class in the AOB non-Brahma division and competed as a first-time exhibitor.
“You have to walk them around with their halter and halter train them,” Callie Marsh said.
Marsh said participating through Madison Parish 4-H helped her get started in livestock showing.
Wil’laddyn Nelson
“This is my first year showing through 4-H,” she said. “A bunch of my family and cousins have from different parishes, so that’s how we got into it.”
Carter Marsh showed a commercial heifer named Trudy and won Grand Champion Louisiana Bred Commercial Heifer. He also placed first in his class of commercial heifers.
“I wouldn’t have even considered doing this if it hadn’t been for 4-H,” Carter Marsh said. “It teaches you a lot about responsibility.”
He said raising his heifer required daily work and attention.
“We have to work with her every day,” Marsh said.
Emmalynn Jacobs
In addition to livestock competitions, three Madison Parish 4-H members — Cayden, Lex and Denver — participated in the district parade in Delhi alongside the Madison High School Band.
Another Madison Parish participant, Wil’laddyn Nelson, a fifth-grade student at Wright Elementary, also competed in the poultry division, winning several awards.
“I’ve always loved raising chickens with my dad, so I joined the Henderson Project 4-H Club and started showing bantams,” Nelson said. “I learn a lot about taking care of my birds, and one of my favorite parts is showing my chickens at the district livestock show.”
Madison Parish 4-H members will continue participating in livestock events as the State show grows closer.
