Tallulah Academy Trojans' seniors made the most of their final regular-season game in R.A. "Racer" Holstead Memorial Stadium Friday night, handing the visiting Newton Academy Generals a 54-44 loss to extend TA's winning streak to 2.
The game stayed close for four quarters as TA went into halftime leading a one-score contest 26-20.
The teams traded scores in the second half, but the Trojans answered the call to pull out the close win to close out regular-season home play.
TA running back Paul Michael Machen kicked off scoring for the Trojans with a 42-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The Generals tied things up with a 7-yard, second-quarter touchdown pass. Machen gave TA the lead again with a 13-yard touchdown reception from Dee Morgan. Morgan extended TA’s lead, this time on the defensive side of the ball, with a 30-yard pick six.
Newton responded with a 28-yard touchdown run to keep things close, but the Trojans would also answer, this time with a second run from Machen, getting in the end zone from 14 yards out. The Generals found pay dirt before halftime on a 54-yard touchdown run and TA went into the break leading 26-20.
Machen added to his big night early in the third quarter with a 23-yard touchdown run and Dee Morgan found Cade Morgan through the air for the extra 2 points.
Later in the third, the Generals scored on a 60-yard pass, but the Morgan-to-Morgan connection would provide more points for TA with a 26-yard touchdown. Machen again found the end zone on the ground, this time from 6 yards out, and TA led NA 48-28 heading into the final quarter.
The Generals tacked on two touchdowns in the fourth, while TA added one on a 6-yard run from Dee Morgan to give the Trojans the win.
Friday's victory gives the Trojans a 5-3 mark on the year heading into tonight's road game with Porter's Chapel Academy in Vicksburg. Porter's Chapel currently sits at 6-3 on the year. Kickoff for tonight's game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
