Union Parish – Just before 11 a.m. Saturday, Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating a two-vehicle, fatal crash at the intersection of LA Hwy 15 and LA Hwy 550. This crash claimed the life of 74-year-old Rosemary Smith.
According to LSP officials, the initial investigation revealed a 2007 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Smith, was traveling eastbound on LA Hwy 550. At the same time, a 2013 Honda Odyssey, driven by 81-year-old James Beaird, also of Spearsville, was northbound on LA Hwy 15. According to the investigation, Smith failed to stop at the posted stop sign and was struck by the Honda. After the impact, both vehicles exited the roadway and the Chevrolet caught fire.
As a result of this crash, Smith sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The passenger of the Impala was transported to a local hospital for life-threatening injuries. LSP officials said, due to the fire, it is not known if the vehicle's occupants were properly restrained at the time of the accident.
Beaird, who was wearing his seat belt, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Two additional passengers were transported to local hospitals; one for life-threatening injuries, and the other for non-life-threatening injuries; both were also restrained.
Although impairment is not a suspected factor, toxicology samples were taken and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers said they wish to remind motorists to obey all posted traffic control signs and to remain cognizant of vehicles traveling in all directions when approaching intersections. The difference between life and death can be as simple as stopping and looking in both directions before proceeding through an intersection, they said.
In 2021, Troop F has investigated 54 fatal crashes resulting in 45 deaths.
