Local officials in Tallulah are putting their money where their mouths are when it comes to providing community activities aimed at giving local residents - especially youth - healthy and productive ways to spend their time.
Saturday, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament held at the Tallulah-Madison Community Center was evidence of that push for community involvement and the winning team - made up of Demarrion Walker, Bennie Meadows and Lorenzo Wheeler - took home $300 in winnings to go along with bragging rights.
Tallulah Chief of Police Buster McCoy said the event’s first installment was a success, with four teams signing up to play and the hope of growth for future tournaments.
“It was initiated this year to foster community involvement and a partnership with local law enforcement to combat violence and to create a safe and thriving environment for our youth and young adults,” McCoy said. “ We congratulate our winners.”
In addition to Saturday’s tourney, TPD, along with the City of Tallulah, the Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office the Madison Parish District Attorney’s office and the Sixth Judicial District Court are also presenting other community activities aimed at local involvement and education, including a criminal records sealing clinic scheduled for September 13, and the annual "No, Guns, Know God" peace event, scheduled for Sat., Aug. 21.
For additional information on both events, see the announcements calendar in the Thurs., Aug. 12, edition of the Madison Journal and the online community calendar at madisonjournal.com.
