During its regular meeting Monday, the Madison Parish Police Jury unanimously approved the sale of a piece of parish property and also discussed the details of another tract of land’s lease with City of Tallulah officials.
Jury members unanimously agreed to sell a building on Chicago Street once used for voting to a private citizen for $,1000. Members agreed the site had not been used “in a long time” and would likely be put to better use with a new owner.
Police Jury members also spoke with City of Tallulah attorney David Doughety, who expressed concern over the status of a lease the city holds from the police jury on land at the site commonly known as the fairgrounds.
Doughtey said the concern of the city is over a 99-year sublease it secured from the police jury for a 6.87-acre tract of land on the fairgrounds, which he added is of interest for lease by the Madison Parish School District.
Doughtey said the city became concerned after several attempts to clarify leasing questions with the police jury went unanswered and said he did not wish to take legal action in the matter in order to remedy the situation.
MPPJ President Jane Sanders said jurors would not discuss the situation with city officials, or concerned members of the parish - although citizens were allowed to speak about the topic at the meeting - without the parish lawyer present, advising the city’s counsel to “do what you have to do.”
