The Oakwood Cemetery Board of Directors has made significant improvements in the appearance, upkeep and maintenance of both cemeteries since becoming active volunteers to bring beauty and cleanliness to resting places of Tallulah’s deceased loved ones.
There is great pride in these accomplishments, but the longevity of these efforts needs the support of the community in many facets of its maintenance. With the spring now here and the summer fast approaching, your help is needed and would be greatly appreciated to prevent the cemeteries from reverting back to their poor condition.
The board believes all would agree the efforts of those that are working hard every day to assure New Oakwood is a place deserving of the many compliments given, both near and far, and of becoming again what it once was could use support.
But, in order to achieve and maintain these efforts, the board is soliciting the community’s support in several areas.
Financially: All the compliments that everyone offers when they visit the cemetery daily, weekly and monthly, or those that visit occasionally from near and far on vacations, and expressly those that are interred there as their final resting place, is the direct result of the maintenance teams that has been hired to do the work they do. In order to maintain these areas, it takes finances.
The board would like to ask churches ($100, or what you can afford, but please contribute), individuals ($15, or what you are willing to give, but please give) and businesses to consider making a monthly contribution to the Cemetery Club. Recognizing that if each individual and/or family gave $15 a month, the growth and potential fo the cemeteries to grow with plans and for other necessities, especially a maintenance crew, would mean a self-sufficient cemetery.
Community support: The Cemetery Club has made, and will continue to create ways (fundraising, community clean up days and other outreach efforts) to continue to work toward a maintenance plan that will always keep our community and loved ones’ final resting place one Tallulah can hang its hat on with pride.
Individuals and families: One of the original rules the organizers of the Cemetery Club stressed and gave particular attention and emphasis to was how to keep the cemetery well-maintained and stress the cleanliness of each grave site. They stressed and asked that grave sites not be cluttered with rocks, fences, wine/beer and other bottles and personal items that eventually end up scattered throughout the cemetery and create difficulty for those working to maintain it, which becomes items that are dangerous hazards to the maintenance crews, to other individuals visiting the grave sites for their loved ones and, most importantly, taking up space that far exceeds the grave site of their loved one. The board is asking those of you who have done such things in the past, though the intent is to honor a loved one, to take the time to make corrective measures and respect the boundaries of the graves of yours, and others, loved ones. We understand this creates potential problems, but please remember the space your burial fees cover is that of immediately around the grave sites of your loved ones.
For those who want to support efforts of the board, whether financially, through community projects, or individual cleanup efforts, you can do so by sending a contribution to: The New Oakwood Cemetery Club. P.O. Box 1655, Tallulah, LA 71284.
Please know and be assured all of your contributions are recorded and acknowledged. They are also available for your review and questions.
Thank you in advance for you financial, community and individual support.
