On Saturday, June 7, 2025, in scorching temperatures, adults and children gathered under the balcony at the home of the Tallulah Arts Guild at 212 S.Chestnut St. The guild is one of Tallulahs most recently founded nonprofits committed to providing a dedicated artspace for local and regional artists and offering instruction in the fine arts. It has a standing commitment to foster community development through community support and service.
Several area leaders attended the Joy Fest in agreement to share ways they are currently working to advance the communities in Tallulah and our next door neighbor, Vicksburg.
Attendees enjoyed music food and fellowship while presenters encouraged attendees with ideas that have brought them success in their endeavors to uplift not only the faithful but all in need of food, shelter, care, and instruction.
Charlie Butler, the Superintendent of Madison Parish schools discussed the districts difficulties and achievements. We were sorely impressed by the fact that each student lost to our district means not only the loss of that students talent and legacy but a financial loss, as thousands of dollars follow each student that leaves. Watch for announcements regarding bus tours of our schools offered by the district in the fall. We have to educate our children here and keep funds for our schools here! Ask about volunteer opportunities at a nearby school.
Rosie Roach represented East Star, and Pastor T. Watson informed attendees of the many services and programs already in place for their members, the parish youth and the community. Please contact them and describe your needs as they have so much to offer!
Pastor Tiana Rebearson visited from Vicksburg Seventh Day Adventist. After rolling in on his motorcycle, we enjoyed inspiring words of faith, encouragement and certain fulfillment of promises for a renewed earth. The pastor requested input regarding programming for youth which might be duplicated in his community. He is open to everyone’s ideas.
Pastor Wesley McNorton of the North East SDA on McCall, who is well know for his leadership in community service, attended along with Children's church attendees and Elder and Sister Love, who are pivotal in the organization of Children's activities and broad community services for Winsboro, Monroe, and Tallulah. Pastor McNorton offered an explanation of how we could get involved in service and handed out a pamphlet that includes an application for volunteer registration. Contact their church office for more details.
Pastor "Ernie" Hall shared stories and circumstances regarding his work at the River City Rescue mission. Though the recounts of those living without food, housing and living with addiction and illness are difficult, we can help change those stories into our personal accomplishment by donating money, gently used clothing, household goods, furniture and equipment as well as working cars for tax deductible donations to support the mission. Stop by the mission on Tuesday night for service or Monday through Saturday for a peek in the thrift store. There are many fresh faces around that once appeared hopeless without food, shelter or sufficient clothing. Help further this mission on 3705 Washington Street in Vicksburg. Call for large donation pick ups.
John stuckey of Tallulah Estates and Thomas Mitchell discussed their personal faith journeys and how it enabled them to become successful community participants in previous projects and life encounters.
The presentations were followed by the true stars of the Joy Fest! After brief instructions the children performed for everyone in a flag performance to the song "Every Praise." There, we saw the reasons for building community. There, we saw the reason for cleaning and repairing our house and businesses. There, in the energy of beautiful faces of our children lies our great purpose. Let us Love our city by taking care of it and it's people. Let's save it for our children.
Joy Fest thanks Delta Bank, Doug’s IGA, C.Sturdivant galleries, and Mrs. Mary Trichell for sponsoring the event. Also, thank you to Anthony Herman and Darence Johnson of Vicksburg SDA for working tirelessly on the grounds!
Thank you in advance for your commitment to do something everyday to remember Tallulahs story and to add a new chapter with your name in it!
