Samuel Jones, a senior at Delhi Charter School and a native of Tallulah, has been awarded a $12,000 scholarship to attend Grambling State University. He received the scholarship after participating in Grambling’s summer band camp, where he played bass drum on the drumline.
Jones has been a member of the Delhi Charter drumline for the past three years. He plans to continue performing in the band program at Grambling while pursuing a degree in either engineering or business management.
“I am very grateful,” Jones said. “With the band I get so many memories. I love it and I don’t plan on giving up.”
Jones said he plans to graduate from Delhi Charter in May 2026. He described the band experience as one that has given him direction and motivation, encouraging other students to consider joining.
“It’s a good experience and you can get a scholarship pretty easily in band,” he said.
Jones also thanked his drum instructor, Miguel Montgomery of Louisiana, for his support and guidance throughout the years.
“He taught me from day one,” Jones said. “He made me become the person I am.”
Delhi Charter School recognized Jones’s achievement in a post on social media, writing, “Congratulations to DCS Senior Sam Jones on receiving a $12,000 Scholarship to Grambling State University while at GSU Band Camp! Way to go! DCS Drumline is making moves!”
