Madison Parish high school seniors are encouraged to apply for scholarships offered by the John H. Scott Memorial Fund. The deadline to submit applications and supporting documents is March 31.
Each year, the Fund awards scholarships to two graduating seniors from public schools in East Carroll, Madison, or Tensas parish. First place receives $8,000 and second place receives $4,000, with both awards distributed over four years. Since 1982, the Memorial Fund has recognized outstanding graduates and helped them pursue college.
The scholarships honor Rev. John H. Scott, a Baptist leader and human rights activist from Lake Providence who was instrumental in gaining voting rights for Black citizens in Northeast Louisiana after more than 80 years of disenfranchisement.
Special Madison Parish Scholarship Honors Madison Parish Educator
In addition to the annual scholarships, a special $4,000 lump sum will be awarded this year exclusively to a Madison Parish senior in honor of the late Dan V. Snedecor, a longtime educator and community leader.
Mr. Snedecor, a graduate of Southern University who served in both World War II and the Korean War, returned to Tallulah in 1967 to teach science after working in education in Los Angeles. In 1973, he became the first Black Supervisor of Secondary Schools in Madison Parish, and in 1984 he became the parish’s first Black Assistant Superintendent. He was a lifetime member of the Southern University Alumni Association, a 50-year member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, a deacon, and a community board member for multiple Madison Parish organizations. His family describes him with words like Humility, Professionalism, and Dignity. To honor his legacy, his sons, Pallas and Dan V. Snedecor Jr. have partnered with the Fund to offer this one-time scholarship to continue the spirit of opportunity he helped to build.
By applying for the regular Scott Fund scholarships, Madison Parish students will also be considered for the special Snedecor award, making it possible to receive up to $12,000 in scholarship support. Applications and additional information are available at www.jhsfund.org or through your high school counselor. Scholarship recipients will be announced on the first Saturday of May at 10 a.m. at the Tallulah-Madison Community Center.
