Thomas Harris of Tallulah won comedian of the year at the Golden Triangle Music Awards held in Philadelphia, Mississippi.
The Golden Triangle Music Awards is an annual event that recognizes independent artists from Mississippi and the surrounding region. The program includes categories for performers and content creators, with a focus on gospel and related music.
Harris was nominated for three awards in December, including social media content creator of the year and emerging artist of the year, in addition to comedian of the year. He said he did not attend the ceremony and did not expect to receive an award, but was notified later that night that he had won.
“I thought I didn’t win anything,” Harris said. “They called me and told me that I was the winner of a comedian of the year later on that night.”
Harris began posting content during the COVID-19 period and has built an audience across several platforms. His early videos included short clips on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook before shifting to comedy content.
One of his early comedy videos drew significant attention and helped expand his audience.
“Overnight, that particular video got me to my first million views in less than 12 hours,” Harris said.
Harris said his following has grown to more than 1.3 million on TikTok.
He said the recognition reflects on his hometown and the opportunities for local talent.
“People don’t look at these small towns and see talent,” Harris said. “Tallulah has so much talent that needs to be fulfilled and that needs to be out there.”
Harris said he hopes others pursue their goals.
“You can accomplish anything that you want to accomplish,” Harris said. “You just have to do it and trust in God and know that he’s going to bring you to it.”
Harris said he is thankful for the support he has received.
“I’m forever grateful for my friends, for my family, for my followers,” Harris said. “They have been with me through it all.”
