Take part in a ranger-led cooking demonstration at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, at Poverty Point World Heritage Site. The program offers a unique look at prehistoric cooking techniques with an earth oven, showing how the native inhabitants used heated earthen objects and hearths to prepare their food.
“Poverty Point World Heritage Site is one of the most fascinating places in Louisiana, offering a direct connection to the ingenuity and daily lives of people who lived here thousands of years ago,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “This hands-on cooking demonstration at Poverty Point gives visitors a real taste of how people thrived here more than 3,000 years ago. It’s a reminder of the creativity and resilience that have always defined Louisiana.”
Poverty Point World Heritage Site offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience and learn about the earthworks and those individuals who raised them from the ground between the years of 1700 and 1100 BCE. The $6 admission fee provides access to the museum, film theatre, hiking trail, driving tour, and any interpretive events taking place at the site. Seniors have a discounted $4 admission fee, and children 6 and under are admitted free. Ranger-guided tram tours are offered Wednesday – Sunday for $4 per person, free for those 6 and under.
Poverty Point is located at 6859 LA Highway 577 in Pioneer. The park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information, you can follow Poverty Point World Heritage Site on Facebook.
