Several years ago I remember seeing a movie about a young man that worked as a bouncer in a bar. His job was to keep the peace among the people and many times, as alcohol will do to some people, had to fight others to make them leave the place. One particular night he was cut in the side with a knife and when he went to the emergency room he was attended to by a young female doctor.
The doctor asked the man if he ever won a fight. I was surprised when he answered, “no one ever wins a fight.”
There is a lot of truth in this statement. Boxing is a big sport around the world and the victor usually wins a ton of money. People go and watch these men and women beat up on each other and pay or bet a lot of money to do so. Yes one of them comes away victorious but what have you accomplished other than winning the prize? The same is true in a street fight among gangs or on school yards among students. Families or couples also have their difficulties and even though blows may not be exchanged between those fighting, words can be damaging and hurt worse than taking the licks on their bodies. The only problem with these type fights is that there is no prize other than pride.
It doesn’t matter if you are the victor because you are going to suffer just as much as the one that went down. Your body is going to hurt just as much as your opponent if you become involved in a physical altercation. Family members, especially children, are going to suffer from scenes of unrest in a home and verbal abuse among parents. Gang fights are going to leave a community in turmoil especially if someone loses their life.
Fighting began when Adam and Eve gave in to temptation from Satan in the Garden of Eden. The Lord allowed Satan to come in to peoples’ lives and destroy their will to live a perfect life. The first inhabitants of the earth chose to give into worldly ways and it has been this way ever since creation.
Fighting is mentioned many times in the Bible and in various contexts. Depending on the situation, fighting can be noble and good or it can be sinful, but fighting is not wrong in itself. The object of the fight is what determines if it is righteous or evil. Fighting can also be physical or spiritual. In either case a person can be harmed by fighting even if he wins.
Boxing is a sport and recognized around the world in this manner. The winner often times will be beaten and bruised and suffer physical and mental anguish, so can you say that he really won? Fighting among gangs or in families is usually a matter of pride and there is no prize for winning. Everyone that is involved gets hurt.
Fighting a spiritual battle with Satan can only be overcome by giving your life to Jesus and allowing Him to take up your fight for you. Exodus 14:14tells us, “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” He did this for the Israelites as they were fleeing from the Egyptians and He will do this for us today in any and all of our circumstances.
Physically we can fight and claim the victory however we can also be beaten up ourselves. Spiritually we can win and know that our victory is eternal life with Jesus if we will accept Him as our Lord and Savior and turn our life over to Him.
