A last-minute plea of guilty to a charge of attempted second degree murder landed a Tallulah man with 25-year sentence last week in a Madison Parish courtroom.
Ben Jackson pleaded guilty to a 2018 shooting, which occurred in Tallulah, at the last second in order to obtain a reduced sentence after putting off a deal for an extended period of time.
Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office officials didn’t offer any insight into what may have changed Jackson’s mind, but said the offer had been on the table for some time.
“The Madison Parish court accepted a plea agreement for a shooting that occurred in the Family Dollar parking lot in 2018,” MPSO officials said. “Jackson surrendered to Madison Parish deputies shortly after the shooting and was charged with attempted second degree murder. A offer had been made to Jackson leading up to his trial date, however, he had refused. The morning the trial was to begin, the plea was accepted. Jackson had been in custody since the shooting and will serve out the sentence with the Louisiana Department of Corrections."
