Over the last couple of years, I have lost a nephew, two nieces, and a brother, plus many long-time friends. I often wonder that if we could go back to the day before their death and ask each one of them the question, “Are you going to be here tomorrow?"
What would you say if someone asked you this question? Most of us would answer yes without thinking that today could be your last. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 27:1, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.”
This is a question that we really can’t answer. No one knows if we will be here tomorrow. Yes, we can make plans and decisions depending on the future, however no one is guaranteed that we will live to see these plans or decisions become effective.
We are told in James 4:14 that, “…whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”
We expect our older generation to reach that time in life when all of us expect to join Jesus in His eternal home. None of us expect to bury our young people due to tragedy, illness, or by some other cause that takes them home. We lose people that are extremely healthy, in the world’s view, however, God calls them home and all we can do is ask “Why”?
Our time on earth is only temporary. This is something we don’t think too much about, however we realize that any day could be our last. Sometimes our plans don’t match what God’s will is. Think about things we have spent many days, years, or decades, planning or building, then watch them be destroyed in an instant through a natural disaster. Whatever we do or build on this earth is only temporary. Nothing on this earth will last forever.
God does give us instructions on how to live a happy and productive life here on earth. The Apostle Paul told us in Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
All of us need to live today as if it were our last. Each one of us need to understand that if we are followers of Christ, then our home is in eternity with Him. He gave us the Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us in the truth. We need to stay in His Word and listen to what He is telling us. We need to go and tell the world about Him with whatever He provides for us to use. We need to be generous with the provisions God has blessed us with and give to others so that His Word can be spread across the world.
Be an encouragement to others. Share your faith with any and everyone.
As I mentioned about the young people called home at an early age, none of us expected it, but God has His plans for us. How we use our time on earth is up to us and it will be time well spent if we listen to what God says to us through His Word. None of us is promised tomorrow here on earth.
If you do not know God personally, ask Him at this moment to come into your life and live within your heart. When you do this, He will give you a tomorrow with Him for eternity!
