Something that I hope all of us realize is that God has never promised us a tomorrow. Proverbs 27:1 says, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.”
Each of us needs to live as if today is our last day on earth and to live it to the fullest. All of us need to understand that when we waste time, it is something that we will never get back. How we use our time is up to us.
There are many procrastinators in today’s society and all of us know who they are, unless we are one ourselves. We tend to put off what needs to be done. We tend to put off telling our brothers and sisters about the life-saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and say we will do it tomorrow.
There is an old saying that goes like this: Yesterday is a cancelled check, tomorrow is a promissory note; today is ready cash, spend it.
Time, once gone, can never be recalled. Along these same lines are words. Words, once spoken, can never be taken back, no matter how profusely you apologize for misspoken words or you have said something you didn’t really mean.
So many of us have spoken too quickly and too harshly to our loved ones, to co-workers, or to friends, never intending harm to come to any of them. Words hurt and the manner with which they are said adds undue pressure and strain to relationships.
Words spoken, whether they are meant to be spoken in jest, or simply stated by mistake, can never be taken back. Once these words are said, they are gone and will never come back.
Along with time and words something else that we can lose and never get back is opportunity.
Opportunities have stared all of us in the face and we have passed them off as needless items. Later on, we recall these times that are gone, and wish we had capitalized on the opportunity presented.
How many times have we had the opportunity to share the gospel with our friends and neighbors and allowed the opportunity to slip by? How many times have we had the opportunity to say to our family and loved ones three simple words, “I love you,” and have not said it because of some grudge or words that were standing in the way?
How many times has the Lord opened the door of opportunity for you, whether it is job-related, home-related, friend-related, or church-related, and we haven’t answered the call? Then at some point in time we look back and say, “I wish I had...”
Three things in life that, once gone, never come back - time, words, and opportunity.
