The National Weather Service in Jackson, Mississippi, issued a cold weather advisory for Madison Parish that remains in effect from 6 p.m. Sunday to 9 a.m. CST Monday.
The weather service said wind chills may fall to 10 degrees and low temperatures are expected to range from the mid-teens to near 20 degrees across the advisory area, which includes parts of northeast Louisiana.
The weather service said frostbite and hypothermia can occur with exposure.
The agency advised residents to wear layers, a hat and gloves when outside, make checks on older family, friends and neighbors, and ensure portable heaters are used as directed. The weather service said generators and grills should not be used indoors.
The weather service also advised residents to ensure outdoor animals have shelter, food and water, and to wrap, drain or allow faucets to drip to prevent pipes from freezing.
