NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Family and friends of a 7-year-old who was shot and killed in New Orleans earlier this week are set to gather to release balloons in her honor.
WDSU reports that the balloon release is scheduled for Thursday in honor of Dillan Burton, who was shot and killed Sunday night in the city's Algiers neighborhood.
She was riding in a car with her mother at the time of the shooting. The mother and another child in the vehicle were not wounded.
New Orleans police are asking for help from the public in finding a green Nissan Armada SUV which they have described as a vehicle of interest in the investigation, the television station reported.
Burton was in second grade, according to The Times-Picayune / The New Orleans Advocate. Her mother, Maquisha Burton, told the newspaper that her daughter enjoyed reading and could sound out any word and also was diligent about doing her homework.
“My baby. My baby. My baby. My baby. I need my baby,” the 24-year-old Burton told the newspaper Monday. “Why would they do this to my child? Why would they do this to Dillan?”
